May 1st – May Day bank holiday
May day or Labour Day is a public holiday in many countries. It usually occurs on the 1st of May but the date varies across countries. It is associated with the start of Spring as well as the celebration of workers.
15th August- Assumption Day
On the 15thalso (a public holiday) August Greeks all over the country will celebrate one of the most significant days in Christianity, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. To show the importance of this celebration, many thousands of people attend church services throughout the country. Also known as Summer Easter, this is one of the most celebrated days in Greece.
29th August – Kapsa Monastery. The decollation of Iouannis Baptist (John The Baptist)
Thousands of faithful worshippers come from all over Crete to attend this great festival. Tradition is to walk to the Monastery, some walking many miles.
28th October- Oxi Day
Oxi Day is when the nation celebrates the day in 1940 as countries across Europe had to surrender to Hitler’s Axis forces, the Greek prime minister was visited at 3am by a representative of the Hitler force demanding Greeks surrender. The prime minister’s one single word reply “OXI”-NO.
